The Miss Universe 2013 final competition will be held in Moscow on Saturday, November 9th. Miss Truong Thi May is representing Vietnam in the competition. May says she is proud to tell people that she is half Vietnamese, half Cambodian. Born in Phnom Penh, her Cambodian-Vietnamese father died when she was six years old. She grew up among Khmer Krom residents in Bach Lieu province. Miss May is trilingual. She speaks English, Vietnamese and Khmer. "My mother always encourages me to speak the Khmer language, to preserve the Cambodian tradition and culture." During the upcoming Miss Universe 2013 competition, May says she wants to highlight the plight of Vietnamese and Cambodian women who are less fortunate than she is. May says she knows what it's like to be poor and hungry. "I know in both Vietnam and Cambodia, many people are still facing difficulties in their lives. I must help make their voices heard around the world. I understand their sufferings because my family was poor once." May spoke to the VOA Khmer Service's Reasey Poch via Skype from Moscow.

I felt sad kind of sad,she was born in PP city, but on the woold stage she didn't fully represent Cambodia.I understand that she 50/50 between Khmer &yuon, she was raised by Khmer's mother, lived around Khmer in Prey Norkor city, her yuon father deceased when she was 9 yrs of age didn't teach her anything, credit shall go to Khmer's mother and she shall represent Cambodia. Its her choices,i respect that...She gets to be where she at now because of her KHMER'S MOTHER,I ADMIRED HER MOTHER.

Did you read youn news? They said she is a Vietnamese nationality but is an ethnic Khmer. They never say she's something she is not. She actually makes Khmer look good in the eyes of Viet people. There are thousands of Khmers more beautiful and talented than her but they never get the chance to represent Cambodia. Go get them. If Thi May lives in Cambodia, she is just another Khmer girl, going nowhere. At least the Viets are enabling her to reach her potential. You guys should stop bringing in politics into the pageantry.

If Thi May lives in Thailand, she would never get a chance to represent Thailand. The Vietnamese in Vietnam don't have a clue what their government is doing in Cambodia. What we think is going inside Cambodia with respect to Youns is not the same as in Vietnam. They don't have a problem with Khmer people. They get along very well.

She could possibility earn a lot of credit. Miss Troung Thi May/Aka Rasmey was definitely recognizing herself as where she were born, hers ethnic and cultural where of hers grass-root was coming from, although, she had had present herself as a Viet on the Universe 2013 competition.

That's very excellent job to Thi May's.
Believing in future generation to come, we will have so many more such as a mixed blood or a breeding's that is brought over the world as U.S, USSR, Britain, French, China, Chen/Cham/youn/siam.etc.; etc.
That it would matter as long as they all should follow the rule of law-land of Cambodia so they can live and work for Khmer. So, this rule or that matter happens as if and "Only if" have change the CPP's gov and that is not by chance. It must time to change it because the CPP's regime was created by Han Noi to control Khmer for such along time in order to swallow the whole Khmer Nation and Put Cambodia under their confederation and so forth...

I think she can speak Khmer better, but she just didn't want to show it because she is representing Vietnam and she didn't want to upset Vietnamese. Her Khmer speaking has no Khmer Krom accents. I can tell when a person is not fluent or pretending to be.

I read with regrets several hatred filled comments concerning this very proud event, for both the people of Khmer and Vietnam. Like Truong Thi Mai, I grew up in Tra Vinh, Vietnam with Khmer mom and Vietnamese dad to a much more accepting environment. Vietnamese press openly credited her mixed upbringing for her success. Miss Mai publicly claimed her dual representation in Moscow, Russia while Khmer readers inserted ugly racial politics into what may be her best opportunity ever. It's not fair!

What is wrong with khmer krom accent?

This is all what Cambodian people doing ...hatred forward Vietnamese. I am Vietnamese and I am proud on Truong Thi Mai, that she decided to represent Vietnam.

Hatred lead to conflict. How about ... working hard, take care your family, make happy kids and rebuild your country like we (Vietnamese) doing. Growing up mean take responsibility.
Offering your own people better life then you can complain about Vietnam. There are reason that why Mai choose to live and to be a Vietnamese.
