PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Senior ASEAN officials are preparing to
resume talks with China on a code of conduct for the South China Sea, a
senior Cambodian official said.
Soeung Rathchavy, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International cooperation, said ASEAN wants to finalize the code soon but that it depends on China.
"Most ASEAN countries want the COC to prevent tensions or conflicts in the South China Sea. ASEAN efforts have promoted the COC because we don't want the situation to become more serious," she said.
China is expected to meet with senior ASEAN officials in Thailand next week ahead on an ASEAN summit in Phnom Penh next month.

Khmerization's Note: In July, Cambodia has angered the Philippines and Vietnam when, as a host, it failed to issue a joint communique after the Asean Summit, allegedly because of pressures from China.
