Myanmar Revisited? Cambodian Pro-Democracy Activist Jailed For 20 years

A court in Cambodia has sentenced a land rights campaigner and prominent journalist to 20 years in prison.

Mam Sonando, who owns Beehive, an independent radio station that often criticizes the government, was convicted on charges of inciting a rebellion by allegedly conspiring with the residents of Kratie province in the eastern part of Cambodia to form their own separate state.
Sonando, 71, was also fined 10 million riel ($2,500) by the Phnom Penh Municipal court.

"I am happy that I have helped the nation," Sonando told reporters as he departed the court following his conviction.
Sonando had been arrested in 2003 and 2005 on similar charges.

Human rights campaigners claimed the arrest and conviction of Sonando were fuelled by the government’s desire to stamp out any dissent in the country. The particular episode in Kratie, they assert, played amid a backdrop over a struggle for land, with local villagers outraged by the seizure of territory by rubber companies, on behalf of foreign investors.
Beehive Radio broadcast a report accusing the government of having committed crimes against humanity by forcibly evicting thousands of people in the Kratie region.
Clashes last May in the region between protesters and security forces led to the shooting death of a teenage girl.
"Our court has announced a verdict that is politically motivated," said Ou Virak, president of the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights (CCHR), according to Agence-France Presse. "There's no evidence that Mam Sonando has committed these offences."
Sonando, who is also the leader of the Association of Democrats (a pro-democracy movement), has long criticized Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen (who demanded Sonando's arrest earlier this summer).
Virak also declared: “Not only is this verdict a total violation of Mam Sonando’s human rights, it is also embarrassingly unsophisticated and brazen… 20 years is practically a life sentence in many countries, and a death sentence for a man of 70.”
Amnesty International also condemned Sonando's fate, calling it “shocking” and “baseless.”
“This verdict is inexplicable. No evidence was presented at the trial that proved that insurrection actually occurred or that Mam Sonando was involved,” said Rupert Abbott, Cambodia researcher at Amnesty International, who attended the trial, in a statement.
“Mam Sonando is a prisoner of conscience, convicted and imprisoned solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression through his radio broadcasts, and Amnesty International will be campaigning strongly for his release.”
Abbott added: “This unbelievable narrative of secession has been used to silence dissent. Today’s convictions mark a disturbing deterioration in the situation of freedom of expression in Cambodia.”
CCHR lamented a deteriorating climate in Cambodia for human rights this years, citing the murder of an environmental activist by the military in Koh Kong province in April, the shooting of women garment factory workers in Svay Rieng by the city governor’s forces and prison sentences handed out to Boeng Kak women who were protesting land seizures.

The U.N. Human Rights Council's Special Rapporteur for Cambodia said recently that the country's people are "increasingly desperate and unhappy" over land-rights abuses.
Hun Sen, who has ruled Cambodia since 1985, has vowed to stay in power for another three decades, when he reaches the age of 90, according to AFP.

As predicted, Mr. Mam was found guilty.
What's the next steps have to do:
Yes, file the appeal.(not much any difference)
The Government's strategy: The conviction was designed to get Mr. Mam plead bargain (Keyword: shut your mouth). The next step he will be asked to write a letter of confession to the Government, in return he will be pardon by the king. Or/and he will be released with or without plead deal within a week before Obama visits Cambodia in November, 2012 if Obama wins the US presidential election, otherwise, If Obama lost then Mr. Mam will stay longer until he is really sick...

Hun Sen is worst then animals. He is no longer a Khmer rogue but his dumb trick is foreseeable. One day, the Khmer people will skin him alive.

Myanmar (Burma) is moving forward, but Cambodia is moving backward. With Hun Sen as leader, Cambodia will never move forward.

only real way to put the government in check is to really have a mass movement of protestors. They need to let the government know that if any oppositions are incarcerated or killed will be met with mass protests. Let the government fire live rounds into the crowd. It will spark a big out cry from the international countries.

That is how Aung Su Kyi did it. She managed to create a sense of hope and trust among her followers. Many Khmer oppositions have left many supporters behind either killed of jailed. While the opposition leaders enjoy dual citizenships and escape freely whenever their life is in danger. How does that make their supporters feel? Abandoned!

In conclusion, screw Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha. Mu Sochua should have been the one to run the party. She was willing to go to jail and yet the government didn't do anything other than garnish her wages. She was at the pivitol moment for the party leader to seize on. And yet Sam Rainsy couldn't see that or was too selfish? I'll go with selfish. Why in the world would you merge and form a new party with a leader nowhere to be found?

I agreed with you my fellow khmer's friend whoever you are,you got that right!...The leaders suppose to be led not run away and hiding for his safety and left behind abandons all the followers don't care whether they die or putting in jail by his opponent [Cpp] I think these leaders start from Mr Sam Rainsy or kham Sokha all used these people for their political gain.

What's kind of leaders were they? A leader should lead not run and hide, that is coward.Do you think your life is worth more than those whose risked every day to fight in the front line against your opponent Cpp? Do you think your life worth more than Heng Chantha 14yrs old that got killed by Cpp? Well, don't run and hide come fight together, you are a leader not a followers.

Lets me point the real leaders that led the followers to fight injustices in the world, I knew you know them.Dr King of America fought racial discrimination white man putting him in jailed many time he gave his life for freedom. Nelson Mendella of south Africa 27 yrs in jail by Whiteman led his followers to fought for freedom.Ghandee of India led his followers to fight against Imperialism of Engliand.

These were the leaders that led their people to victory regardless obstacle that they face, they don't run and hide;they fought togethers and die togethers, for these leaders above is not worth to follow,I am glad that I am not a politician also I won't vote for these leaders above either.I prefer Mr Mam Sonondo to be my leader,he the man that I admired the most.Mr Mam Sonondo is perfect to be president of Cambodia, follow him you'll never be regretted.

sam rainsy is a coward plain and simple. cambodian people are too scared to pull of a mass protest but i think when the new generation come it could happen.mam sonondo would make a better leader over sam rainsy and the guy shows no fear and is 71. he is a hero willing to sacrife for his country

I mean Khmer's leaders( NRP) leaders...Its not worth to follow.

Yes all of them coward, except Mr Mam Sonondo the hero of our time.Mr Mam Sonondo among Chea Vichea,Chut Vuthy and Heng Serey Odom. One day I'll make a brone statue for them,I spend my own money. These all mention leaders deserve recognition, just like Lok ta khlang moueng in the past.

Why are you attacking oppositions? Right now thy need your support. For oppositions leadership is important but for now Sochua Mu, Sam Rainsy or Kem Sokha are fighting for the nation NOT for themselves. Haven't they done enough sacrifice for the country? There is a reason why Sochua Mu and Kem Sokha believes in Sam Rainsy leadership and why Sam Rainsy still puts his hands up after many attempted assassination from Hun Sen.

If the opposition wins and the party votes for a new leadership, Sam Rainsy will surely and happily approve the next leader. Please stop attacking oppositions. Now is te time to show the world we support te opposition leaders because they have our trust.

To: 3 October 2012 9:02 AM-----Read my post "3 October 2012 12:04 AM".

I just gave you my reason why I dislike Rainsy and Sokha. They are just trying to reignite the supporters into the same thing. They are hoping the International countries would step in to help them as always.

Kmenhwatt just given you some fine example of Freedom fighters. I am not going to throw my support for someone who lead their supporters to jail or death while they enjoy DUAL CITIZENSHIP and escape whenever they pleases.

Sam Rainsy just wrote a funny piece title POLITICAL WILL. Ironically, he has no will. Just look at how many times he left Cambodia because of a threat? Are there that many dumb people in his party that can not take control of the party? He forms a party with Kem Sokha and Kem must be desperate to form a party whose leader is most likely not that popular with the grassroot no more. To top it off Sam Rainsy is still the leader!

In the end, I hope these overseas oppositions know that they are doing more harm to the Khmer people in Cambodia. They are providing them with false hope and the same image as the Famous King Father and his Bastard SONS! Sam Rainsy is close to joining their ranks and Kem Sokha is not too far. I would never lead my supporters to death if I`m not willing to stand by them.

To those who is going to rebuttal my piece. I ask that you give me a good reason why you disagree and not give me ignorant comments. Can`t engage in a adult debate, stay the F*&K OUT.

My response to you!
Sorry I didn't attack your leaders, you should read before you said that I attack them. Its just my opinion and what I have seen.I admired Mr Sam Rainsy for a long time since I followed him during he just came back from France and made his name in the politic arena. Now I've not seen him do anything to noticeable beside run away from his opponent Cpp Hun sen.If I have to chose my leader today I would chose Mr Mam Sonondo, He is admired to all generations as a real leader to any society not just Khmer. Therefore,in my opinion Mr Sam Rainsy is gave up to soon, not willing to fight a good fight, let Hun sen his opponent know his weak point of view, run away selfishness thinking for himself only, left behind his supporters to fight with the oppressors/ his opponent[Hun Sen] for themselves without a leader.

To 3 October 2012 9:44 AM,

I agree with your view, partially. But it seems to me you're not doing anything different from those whom you're criticizing.

Mr. Rainsy and Mr. Sokha should and could have done better, no question about that. But since when does our country have a perfect leader?

Why can't the so-called smart and honest patriots, yourself maybe one, step up to the plate and lead the rest of us?

Please show us what you're willing to do, not what others are afraid of! If you can do that, you'll probably have more followers than Mr. Rainsy and Sokha together have.

You already got one in Srok Khmer now his name is Mr Mam Sonondo, even if he is in jail now, that the person you should follow he pave the way for you all to follow.I am not a politician nor plan to be one.If I were politician I won't run away or left my followers behind to fight Cpp alone.I'll walk the same road as Dr Martin Lurther King Jr fought against injustice/discrimination in the 60's in America paid for with his life, and that the kind of leader I admired and I will follow.

Kmenhwatt.

"If I were politician I won't run away,...". It could also mean you're "coward" (sorry for the strong word), that's why you're not a politician.

It's very easy to say this person or that person runs aways; Anyone can say that. The fact is when you're know you're facing a certain death or prison terms, you'll do like many others do. So don't be so quick to judge Sam Rainsy.

You do what you like to do, why run away from what you like to do? You're well known in political arena who in the right mind will kill you? Do you think that Hun Sen dare to kill Sam Rainsy? No body quick to judge Mr Sam Rainsy all I said was he run away from His opponent left his supporters to struggle without a real leader, and I won't follow him.I said I was admired him while he fought against oppressor Cpp regime, but now I don't and I won't.I am not a politician for a reason not because I afraid to die.So please you are so quick to judge me without knowing me.I am not a coward,I am not a politician,I don't have any followers like Mr Sam Rainsy,if I were him I won't run nowhere,I stand my ground, leader is suppose to lead not run away.

THis is actually what the CPP dogs wants us to do. FIGHT EACH OTHER.

Kem Soka and Sam Raincy never used to like each other, now they are putting the nation behind their self interest.

Why cant you be like the opposition leaders who have sacrificed so much fro our country? Instead of attacking Kem Soka or Sam Rainsy or even belittleing Mu Sochua, why cant we all support them and offer them our full support.

Its easy to say, they are scared of dying, and scared of Hun Sen. Who wouldnt be?? Would you be if Hun Sen tries to kills you again and again?

Dont be a CPP dog and work together to remove the traitors who have been skinning the Khmer people alive for the past 33 years.
