A sex offender who had been wanted by law enforcement for nearly six years was caught in Cambodia, according to the Wakulla County Sheriff Donnie Crum. James William Alday, 44, formerly of Crawfordville, was captured with the help of the Cambodian government and is being detained at the Cambodian Consulate.
A sex offender who had been wanted by law enforcement for nearly six years was caught in Cambodia, according to the Wakulla County Sheriff Donnie Crum. James William Alday, 44, formerly of Crawfordville, was captured with the help of the Cambodian government and is being detained at the Cambodian Consulate.
Alday was
registered as a sex offender at a Crawfordville address but never
followed up with authorities when he moved. His Visa was suspended by
the Cambodian government when it was discovered that Alday “absconded”
as a sexual offender in January of 2007, said Crum.
Florida
Statute states a sexual offender must alert the sheriff of the county
he or she lives in within 48 hours of leaving that county. The sex
offender must give the jurisdiction the address of their intended
residence in their new jurisdiction. Alday failed to do so before
leaving the country.
According
to the FBI, which contacted WCSO about the case today, Alday was
working as a teacher in Vietnam. He will be flown back to the United
States within a week, where he will be picked up by WCSO officials in
Atlanta.
He was originally arrested in Leon County in 1994 for sexual battery of a child under 12 years old, according to Crum.
