Cambodia Punishes Chinese Woman for Tearing Sihanouk Portrait

Cambodian authorities have convicted a Chinese woman to a one-year suspended jail term after she tore up two picture of the late King Norodom Sihanouk.
The incident has sparked anger amongst Chinese netizens, but it’s not over how Cambodian authorities treated Wang Zia Chao. Rather, it was how China’s Foreign Ministry reacted to the issue.
On Monday, the manager of a clothing company reportedly grew impatient when her Cambodian workers were mourning over Sihanouk’s portrait during work hours. She took one of the portraits and tore it up, riling up the workers. Police were called in and a huge crowd of Cambodians gathered around her as police forced her to kneel in repent before Sihanouk’s image.
Wang said later she did not know whom the image was of when she tore up the posters.
On Wednesday, in response to a question about Wang's punishment, Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said “King Sihanouk was a great friend of the Chinese public, and is beloved by Cambodians. The woman’s individual action was extremely wrong, and Cambodian authorities should deal it according to its laws.”
The official Chinese response is now being blasted online. Feathers were already ruffled last week after Sihanouk passed away in Beijing, and Chinese authorities set up an elaborate farewell procession for him. Many were unhappy that flags flew half-mast for someone they did not believe was deserving of the honors.
Commenting on the woman’s punishment, one netizen writes, “Who can tell me just exactly what her crime was”. Another says “I’m a bit confused, what exactly does a country’s dignity mean?”
Wang’s jail term has been suspended, and she is awaiting deportation.
Cambodia’s former King Norodom Sihaouk passed away on October 15th in Beijing, after a long battle with cancer.

Chinese woman was supposed to be well educated, but why this Chinese woman was hired to be a manager without learning about the Khmer culture. It sounds like she forced everyone to work like slaves just like the Communist China.

Why the people of China did not listen closely to what is going on. This Chinese woman should not be hired to work here. Who picked her to work as the manager.

Look at her, is she a professional or lack of knowledge of working condition. Why has this Chinese woman think the working condition like Chinese workers who worked like slaves or over work?

Cambodia country has given her more opportunity more than China country. Maybe she would not be able to find work in China as the manager. Why was she acting such evil way and so mean?

Think about folks.

Does this Chinese woman named Wang Xiao Jiao have the University or College degree before she worked to be promoted as the manager?

We heard that many Chinese people have been given more opportunities and big favor to have a good and decent high paying jobs. Then, why are they acting so stuck up and evil by looking down others who are working lower than them. They don't care about the community, but they care about themselves, but not all of them. Some of them are very nice and well educated. Some of them were having bad experiences in the past and then took revenges against others who are not part of the bad experiences or violence.

Don't know why? Cambodian people have been through so much and this Chinese woman still does not learn how difficult in life Cambodian/Khmer people have been through.

This Chinese woman does not have a sympathy on Cambodian people who have been trough.

Why the Chinese people in China turn into the blind eyes like that against Cambodian people.

This is a lesson learn. We did not like the way corrupted CPP government did to her either. Yes, she has paid the respects. She needs to learn the lesson and help other become well educated.

People of Cambodia are very gentle, polite, showing the respects to others, sensitive and they don't want to be looked down on.

The Chinese people should know that many Cambodian people work like slave with low wages because of the selfish managers or owners.

Chinese bloggers should not be outraged at the sentence of this Chinese woman because she has broken Cambodian law and looked on Khmers, especially those who worked under her.

If she did this in Thailand, she could be lynched by the Thai workers, or will be sentenced to more than 20 years jail. At least Cambodia just fined her a few hundred dollars and let her return home to her family.

You absolutely have made the good point. You should post the comment at their web blogger site to explain to them.

The Chinese bloggers should not overreact. Of courses, this Chinese woman looked down on Khmer workers who worked for her like slaves with low wage.

All about misunderstood culture differences. This Chinese woman had mentality of controlling just like all communist leaders had done to their people. She didn't know the picture was the X-king,because of the picture that caused distractions among her workers that was why she did what she did(cutting pictrue to pieces).

Was that insult to the deceased's king? To those whose loves and worship him would be YES,to me NO! After knowing that she almost cause riot police arrested her made her prostrated infront of the king portrait also paid the fine.Cpp double standard let previous offender by the name Thapanee off the hook without charge her anything only forced to apologized and prostrated no fine for this Siam channel 3 news (Thapanee).

For the Chinese woman she lost her job,she was forcing to apologized, paid fine, prostrated infront of king portraits and deportatiion and perhaps put her in the black list from reentry to Cambodia as well.Do you think it was fair and justly to prosecuted the less offender and let the worst offender off the hook without changes? To me is UnFair!!!

Please have compassion we human makes mistakes more or less, the deceased king made more mistake again and again caused millions lives just because his personal's revenged personal's interested as a head of state he careless about his subjects more than any politicians in Cambodia this century ever known,he was a flips flops head of state putting his personal interest before his country and before his people well being, thatwise killingfield was born.R.i.P your Sdach Komrook....

Yobal Khmer,

You apply double standard here. I read that you were so harsh and condemned the Thai reporter for misstepping on Sihanouk's photo unintentionally, yet you said it is ok for this Chinese woman to intentionally ripped and cut Sihanouk's photo?

You said she didn't know whose photo that was. That was not true. She knew the whole world knew that Sihanouk had died and that her workers were praying for Sihanouk's death, so she knew whose photo that was.

I have sympathy for her that they made her kneeled down and prostrated in front of Sihanouk's photo, but she had looked down on Khmers, especially her workers, because she snatched the photos from them, tried to tear them up but when she cannot, she used the scissors to cut them. This is a real insult, not just to the soul of Sihanouk, but to all Khmers, especially her workers.
