Cambodia mourns death of King Father

Former King Norodom Sihanouk

PHNOM PENH, 15 October 2012 (Cambodia Herald)- News of the death of former King Norodom Sihanouk spread rapidly on social media Monday.

Prince Sisowath Thomico, the King Father's personal assistant, said Sihanouk died from a heart attack in Beijing. He was 89.

"The former king died at 2:25 Beijing time. This is a big loss for Cambodia," the prince said.

He noted that it was also a big loss for the international community as Sihanouk was the only surviving founder of the Non-Aligned Movement formed in 1961.

King Norodom Sihamoni plans to go to Beijing to bring his father's body back to Cambodia for a royal funeral, sources said.

Cambodians were shocked at the news which came early Monday morning on a public holiday.

"I was sad to hear he had died," said Muy Ly, 65. "He was a very good king and everybody loved him."

Hay Ly Ieng, 60, said the King Father achieved much for Cambodia including independence from France.

"This is a very sad situation for Cambodia. His name will be inscribed in Cambodian history and world history as well," he said.

Others expressed sadness and shared news about the King Father's death on social media.

"So sad for the loss of King hero. Please rest in peace," said Sopheary.
