Royalist merger seen affecting opposition party strategies

Prince Norodom Ranariddh (L) signed an alliance with Nhiek Bunchhay (R).

PHNOM PENH, 24 May 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - The planned merger of Funcinpec with the Norodom Ranariddh Party is expected to affect the election strategies of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and the Human Rights Party.

A reunited royalist party could attract votes from former Funcinpec supporters who switched to the opposition parties after Prince Norodom Ranariddh was ousted as leader in 2006.

Even though the merger is not expected until after the June 3 commune election, the royalists could be strong competitors against the Sam Rainsy and Human Rights parties, now the biggest opposition parties in the National Assembly.

Competition will depend, however, on the leadership abilities of Ranariddh and Nhiek Bun Chhay who have already been named as chairman and deputy chairman of the merged party.

The merger was announced Thursday after a meeting organised by Prime Minister Hun Sen whose ruling Cambodian People's Party is ready to work with the reunited royalist party.

As such, the royalists can now be seen by the CPP as future partners rather than political adversaries.

Hun Sen knows clearly that the opposition parties will gain more votes than before. That's why in order to reduce the influences of opposition parties, he used these people. I hope Cambodians should be smart aginst this trick.
