PHNOM PENH, 1 May 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Some 5,000 workers
took part in a May Day march from Wat Phnom to the National Assembly
Tuesday to hand over petitions to lawmakers asking for better working
conditions.
Among the 14 requests was one to more than double the basic minimum monthly wage from $61 to $131 and for government workers to get at least $200 a month.
A prominent union leader meanwhile marked May Day with a nine-point list of demands to improve working conditions and the quality of life for workers.
Chea Mony, president of the Free Trade Union of Workers, called for the creation of an independent labor court and an end to discrimination against trade unions.
He also appealed for salary increases, an end to corruption and violence against workers and further investigation of the murder of his slain brother Chea Vichea, the former head of the union who was gunned down in 2004.
Unlike previous years, the union did not hold a May Day march, saying it was taking a more "diplomatic" approach towards the government.

Fight for your rights under the peaceful way of expression of freedom,if we don't fight now,we will never win...fight for your rights ,if you don't do now then,when?...fight for your rights and the rights of mliions khmers that will follow to the be better for the next generation to come.
